Premesntürel yani adet öncesi disforik bozukluk tanısı, DSM-5 ile birlikte psikoloji literatürüne girdi cânım kadınlar. Bunun literatüre girmesi çok çok iyi oldu çünkü adet başlangıcından bir hafta önce bazı kadınlarda diğer kadınlara nazaran çok daha belirgin bir şekilde; -duygu geçişleri, -öfke, -huzursuzluk, -depresif duygudurum, -kaygı, -yaşama katılmaya dair isteksizlik , -konsantrasyon güçlüğü, -enerji azlığı, -iştah değişikliği, -uyku problemleri, -kontrolü yitirme hissi, -göğüs hassasiyeti, -kas ve eklem ağrısı, -şişkinlik gibi fiziksel belirtilerden en az 5 tanesinin görüldüğü durumlarda bu tanı konulur. Bazı kadınlarda adet öncesi semptomlar majör depresyon bozukluğu kadar engelleyici olabilir ve kadınların en üretken yıllarının yaklaşık 3000 günü bu ağır belirtilerle geçmektedir.
